The manuscript of the poem was accompanied by a document where Seferis had copied some passages from Paul Mazon’s Introduction to the Oresteia, which referred to the end of Aeschylus’ Eumenides.

‘The Semnae promised to the Great-Priest to return to their cave and from there to protect the city for eternity. This is what the God of Greece commanded: Cry aloud now in echo to our song.’ (Οι Σεμνές υποσχέθηκαν στον επίσκοπο-Αρχιερέα να ξαναμπούνε στο σπήλαιό τους και μένοντας εκεί να προστατεύουν την πόλη ώς τη συντέλεια των αιώνων. Το πρόσταξε ο Θεός της Ελλάδος. Ὀλολύξατε νῦν ἐπὶ μολπαῖς  νῦν ἐπὶ μολπαῖς ὀλολύξατε…); these lines echo Aeschylus’ Eumenides 1033-end.
