The project is funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and its duration will be 36 months. It is hosted by the Open University of Cyprus
What is it?
The aim of the ‘Eumenides’ project is to catalogue and analyze the multifarious ways in which ancient Greek tragedy and tragic myth have been adapted, reinterpreted, revised, or re-imagined in modern Greek poetry and theatre from the late 19th century to the present day. In particular, it will explore the various ways in which Greek tragedy has been a crucial factor in the formation of a poetics and a politics of modern Greek national and cultural identity.

What are our objectives?
- To lay the foundations for a freely available and searchable online database containing detailed information on works of creative writing (principally theatre and poetry) in modern and contemporary Greece and Cyprus that explicitly or implicitly respond to Greek tragedy or tragic myth.
- To focus discussion by publishing thematically oriented papers in specialist journals or in collective volumes on various aspects of the reception of Greek tragedy in modern Greece and Cyprus
